Wallpaper, Themes and Icons

Wallpaper/Background
You can find wallpapers or backgrounds at art.gnome.org and customize.org. After you download the images go to System>Preferences>Appearance, then the background tab, select add, locate your wallpaper and click on add.
Themes
You can get themes from gnome-look. The themes are contained in tar.gz files. After downloading the file, go to System> Preferences> Appearance. Under the ‘theme’ tab click on install, select the tar.gz file and choose open.
Note: sometimes you have to open the downloaded tar.gz file and extract another tar.gz file that actually contains the theme. For example, when you download the aero-clone theme, the file name is 57532-aero.tar.gz. But you actually want the aero-clone.tar.gz that is archived within the first file. So open 57532-aero.tar.gz, find aero-clone.tar.gz, and extract it. Then install the aero-clone.tar.gz using the steps above.
Icons
You can also download new icons from gnome-look. They can be installed exactly like themes as described above.
To use the new icons go to System> Preferences> Appearance and click on Customize. Under the Icons tab, select the new icon.
