Dock

Avant Windows Navigator (awn) is similar to the dock in Mac OS that sits on the bottom center of the screen. It shows open applications and shortcuts to programs or folders. It also has applets for weather, gmail, system monitor, Dilbert comics and more.
The installation guide below is based on two articles (awn’s wiki and an arsgeek article). I tried to make it as easy as possible and without using the terminal window.
1. Go to System> Administration> Synaptic Package Manager. Then Settings> Repositories> Third Party Software. Add the following two apt lines.
deb http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42 gutsy avant-window-navigator
deb-src http://download.tuxfamily.org/syzygy42 gutsy avant-window-navigator
2. Click Reload. Then search for “avant window”. You will get five results.
First, double click on avant-window-navigator-bzr. Ubuntu will warn you about unauthenticated software. (like with installing screenlets) If you are okay to install, click on mark.
Second, double click on awn-core-applets-bzr. Click on mark. Then apply.
3. Go to System> Preferences> Sessions. Then Add. Enter “awn” in the name field and “avant-window-navigator” in the command field. Then Ok and Close.
4. Restart your computer. The dock should now appear. To configure awn go to System> Preferences> Awn manager. You can change the appearance, add applets, and install themes.
Quick Tip: To add a shortcut to an application, drag and drop its icon onto the dock.
